Class 3
Welcome to Class 3! My name is Beverly Wood and I am pleased to be working with you for the success of your student. Long ago, C.C. Barnes, who wrote the introduction to the history book Mighty Men said, “Unless a child's imagination is wakened, so that it moves like a light through the things he must learn, what he gathers from his learning will only be the dried specimens from his teachers' collection, and not the living flower he has smelled for himself.”
I have returned to Meridian's Third Grade Class after a two-year retirement, and with me I bring back in part the Calvert and A Beka Curriculum. Again, C.C. Barnes said, “In recent years the demand for supplementary reading material has been met by authors and publishers in a fine way. History stories make up much of my literature, and this is only natural. In the first place, history is the record of life itself and the reading materials that are selected are the most thrilling, dramatic, and inspiring acts of the great drama.” A Beka provides a clear, strong framework on which all the elementary core subjects can hang in a meaningful order.
I feel children need a historical structure that creates a memorable storyline. Once a child has assimilated a factual storyline, personal exploration soon branches out into other historical areas of interest.
Our class will be learning 28 spelling words each week, completing our daily math, language and writing assignments, memorizing a monthly poem, taking field trips, producing class plays, enjoying Reader's Theaters, etc. The specialists that we will enjoy are: science, music, dance, art, P.E., and computers.
Homework will be assigned Monday through Friday. I would like to request that you check all homework and sign it before the student returns it to school the next morning. It is recommended that each student read 15-20 minutes each evening. This is a minimum. Students are encouraged to read as much as they possibly can each night. Please let me know when homework is a problem.
I am excited to be back at Meridian School teaching the grade I love. You are welcome to come and visit our class any time!
