Poetry Out Loud
Rachel Allen competed in the third annual Poetry Out Loud, advancing through all three rounds of the competition to take second place in the state.

National Leadership Conference
Chase McCloskey and Estee Arts were chosen by the Utah High School Activities Association to attend the National Leadership Conference in Indianapolis,  Utah selected ten representatives, two from each of the divisions 5A - 1A. Both of the 1A representatives are from Meridian School!

All State Honorable Mention
Estee Arts was awarded Honorable Mention for her performance in 1A Basketball; this High School All-state recognition by the Deseret Morning News is given to students who show oustanding athletic ability and sportsmanship.

Utah Jazz Read-a-Thon
Meridian School K-8 students took first place in the Utah Jazz Read-a-Thon contest for the second year in a row! They logged over 1,700 minutes per student between January 25 and February 25 and earned a visit from a Utah Jazz player.

National German Exam
Meridian’s German students finished in the top 84th percentile in the nation on the National German Exam (through the American Association of Teachers of German). Two students, Jane Cox (8) and Nicholas Banks (10) placed second in the state in their language levels and earned a scholarship. Congratulations!

Scholastic Art and Writing Contest
Hundreds of thousands of pieces of work submitted every year. Submitted to regional competitions first with winners being entered into the national competition. Judged on originality, technical skill, and the emergence of a personal voice or vision.

Amanda E. Fujiki, Meridian School, has received a 2007 AATF Outstanding Senior in French Award. This award is made annually to a graduating senior who has demonstrated excellence in the study of French as well as exceptional commitment to the French language and the many cultures where it is spoken.

Accepted for Presentation
Grace Humiston (10) and Humanities Department Chair Justin Kennington have been chosen to present their papers at the Wooden O Symposium/Utah Shakespearean Festival. The symposium is a cross disciplinary conference exploring Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern Studies, through the text and performance of Shakespeare's plays. Scholars from all disciplines are encouraged to submit papers that offer insights and new ideas springing from the era of William Shakespeare. Grace Humiston's critical essay was titled "House Of Sale: The Prostitution Motif in Hamlet". Justin Kennington's paper titled "The Method of His Madness: Hamlet As Artistic Failure" was also chosen.

Utah Young Playwright’s Festival
Kellie Higgins received first place in the 2006 Utah Young Playwrights Festival for her short play "Death Valley" (formerly titled "The Bell"). The Festival is sponsored by the Utah Theatre Association. Kellie’s play was first written and performed at Extreme Theater in October 2005 at Meridian School. It was then read along with other winners as a part of the 2006 UTA Conference. Congrats, Kellie!

2004-2005 Awards
Meridian Student's Work Highlighted in Publication
Ai Yasufuku, a 2005 Meridian School grad, is featured in Scholastic Inc. and the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers publication of The Best Teen Writing of 2005, a collection of the best student works of writing from The Scholastic Writings Awards of 2005. The Scholastic Art & Writing Awards is a national program that offers early recognition of creative teenagers and scholarship opportunities for graduating high school seniors. The anthology showcases 51 of the most talented young writers ages 12-18 from across the country.

Ai Yasufuku and Grace Humiston National Winners, Scholastics Arts and Writing Contest [over 250,000 entries from students all over the country (and a few international students) in grades 7-12. Just under 200 writers were chosen as Gold Medal winners, including Ai (for her short story) and Grace (for the play she wrote as part of Meridian’s Extreme Theatre last year.) From those winners, fifty were chosen to be published in The Best Teen Writing 2005; Ai's was one of those.]

Josh Allen 1st grade state winner, Miles Bay regional 6th grade winner Statewide Arbor Day Poster Contest [over 900 schools participating. 28 region and state winners were selected, of which 2 were from Meridian.]

David Redd Utah State Winner, National Readers Digest Word Power Challenge [only 100 students qualified to compete at the state competition, five came from Meridian, with David winning overall.]
