We believe that the best teachers start by being outstanding students, people who love to search and think and expand. We select teachers who have excelled in one or more of the seven essential subject areas that we emphasize: English, history, math, science, foreign languages, the arts, and physical education. We give our teachers substantial freedom to develop individual course curricula and teaching strategies that express their personal applications of the more general Meridian philosophy. These fine teachers-scholars are devoted innovators, and they are also deeply committed to their students. They know them all personally. They set high standards for them to follow. And they offer them the individualized help and encouragement needed for success.

Her favorite artist is Paul Klee because “his lines are clean and simple, while his colors hold so much depth and emotion.” She also enjoys the work of Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Picasso, and local artist, James Christensen. Madame Bohn, as she is called by her students, started teaching at Meridian in 1990 to cover the cost of tuition at the school of her son, Marc and later her daughter, Rebecca. She had concerns about the declining quality of public education with large class sizes and dwindling discipline. Madame Bohn discovered a real love for teaching. In order to become a more effective teacher, she decided to return to BYU to complete a teaching certificate in French and German. During that time, she had an opportunity to work in the public educational system at the junior and senior high school levels but decided to remain at Meridian, even after her children were no longer there. She has been enthusiastic about starting a foreign language program in lower school and enjoys awakening a love for language learning in younger students. Deirdre Scharffs Registrar, LS Tutor
I am so happy to be the Registrar and Lower School Tutor at Meridian School! I love teaching the Lower School students and helping the Middle and Upper School students look their best on paper. As the Registrar I work a lot with numbers, but as a young girl I was told that I was not very good at math. I grew to avoid it at every extent possible and even chose a university where I could fulfill the math requirement by taking all science courses. Later I discovered I love numbers! With this in mind, I am grateful that my children are students at Meridian School. The teachers are knowledgeable, talented, dedicated and caring. They know their students, know their strengths and weaknesses, and help them gain a glimpse of their potentials. If I could live anywhere in the world it would be right here near Provo so that my children could attend Meridian School
I received a B.A. in History from Georgetown University and an MBA from Yale University. I do not have much time for hobbies, but I love playing tennis with my son, Elliot, making recipes and reading with Sophelia, getting into tickling fights with Ella, watching movies with Brett, and being with friends.

Kurt Wood Science Department Head, Physics, Chemistry, Math
Kurt comes to us having taught for more than seven years at public schools in California and Utah. His experience as a science teacher includes courses in Physics, AP Physics, Earth Science, Aerospace Science, Meteorology and Astronomy as well as courses in algebra. Originally pursuing a professorial career he has degrees from Stanford, BYU and UCLA, holds two masters degrees and has done work toward a PhD. In addition to his strong background in science and math, Kurt is a scholar of Slavic Languages and Linguistics with near-native fluency in Russian. Besides his academic fields, Kurt has strong interests in music, being an experienced vocalist and amateur pianist as well as a collector of folk instruments and music. Kurt loves the outdoors, being somewhat of a naturalist, and dabbles in art and creative writing. He is very enthusiastic about being here at Meridian and has long desired to teach at a school with such high academic standards, one where the majority of students are highly motivated and interested in preparing for college. Kurt feels that the role of a teacher is summed up in the statement “teachers open the door to learning, but the student must walk in.”
