Meridian School is a non-profit corporation and qualifies under paragraph 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code as a charitable organization. As an independent school, Meridian is distinct from other kinds of schools in two critical ways: governance and finance. Meridian School is governed by a Board of Trustees comprised of parents and educators, as opposed to being run by state government (public schools), a church or synagogue (parochial schools), or for-profit ownership (proprietary schools). Meridian School charges tuition and fees and raises additional funds to operate. Public monies or religious subsidies do not support Meridian School. By being independent, Meridian School enjoys the freedom to define its own mission, set admission standards, selects its own faculty, and define curriculum free from state or textbook mandates.
The Meridian School Board of Trustees is responsible for the care of the corporation and to provide the vision that will keep the school fulfilling its mission to its students. They are accountable for the financial well being of the school by setting appropriate tuition, overseeing operation budgets, fund-raising and endowments.
