Meridian Readers Place 1st in Jazz Read-a-Thon
For the third year in a row, Meridian School’s Lower School students were awarded first place in the Scholastic Book Utah Jazz Read-a-Thon.
The month-long contest takes place every January, sponsored by Scholastic Books and the Utah Jazz. Students keep track of the number of minutes that they read out-of-school and turn in their reading slips each week. Minutes are averaged based on the size of the student body and the school with the highest average wins. The top twelve schools receive a visit from a Utah Jazz player. Meridian students read 162,620 minutes; the top reader was fourth grade Sadie Warburton who read just over 6,800 minutes.
On March 2nd, Jazz center Mehmet Okur visited Meridian School to congratulate the students on their success. This is the second time he has been to Meridian and he expressed his affection for the students. “I love being with the kids here (at Meridian).”
This is the third time Meridian School has finished first in the contest and the fifth time they have had a Jazz player visit. Past visits were:
- 2009 Mehmet Okur
- 2008 Matt Harpring
- 2007 Mehmet Okur
- 2006 Keith McLeod
- 2005 Ben Handlogten
